Old dogwood flowering head, showing flowers, and chewed bracts

Old dogwood flowering head, showing flowers, and chewed bracts

I've never seen dogwood bracts chewed (I guess) like that. I suppose this was done by an insect. Bracts are leaves modified in color. Many people think that they are petals. They aren't. The flowers, although quite small, are clearly visible -- see note in the photo. They have four petals each, and you can see the light yellow anthers and the greenish stigmas. More detail is visible at the larger sizes.
